Untaxed Hospitals

Many hospitals look and act like large for-profit businesses, yet they do not pay any real estate taxes. Is it fair? Or do these wealthy organizations get subsidized by local homeowners? I just discovered that the local hospital files 501c3 statements for each department. Why do the healthcare conglomerates do this? Could it be to opacify the true scale of the operation? We will find out!
